چکیده

Our multiscale air quality modeling activities are reviewed. Two different techniques, static grid nesting and dynamic grid adaptions are discussed. The mass conservation and transportive properties of our grid nesting technique are shown in a linear advection problem. Results from an air quality application to the northeastern U.S. are also presented. The solution accuracy with the adaptive grid technique is compared to a uniform grid model, which requires comparable computing effort, for a rotation test. Finally, the potential uses of both techniques are discussed and our perspective for the future of air quality modeling is presented.

Adaptive Grid Use in Air Quality Modeling

The predictions from air quality models are subject to many sources of uncertainty; among them, grid resolution has been viewed as one that is limited by the availability of computational resources. A large grid size can lead to unacceptable errors for many pollutants formed via nonlinear chemical reactions. Further, insufficient grid resolution limits the ability to perform accurate exposure a...

Equidistribution grids for two-parameter convection–diffusion boundary-value problems

In this article, we propose an adaptive grid based on mesh equidistribution principle for two-parameter convection-diffusion boundary value problems with continuous and discontinuous data. A numerical algorithm based on an upwind finite difference operator and an appropriate adaptive grid is constructed. Truncation errors are derived for both continuous and discontinuous problems. Parameter uni...

Initial Application of the Adaptive Grid Air Quality Model

Grid size (or resolution), when inadequate, can be an important source of uncertainty for air quality model (AQM) simulations. Coarse grids used because of computational limitations may artificially diffuse the emissions, leading to significant errors in the concentrations of pollutant species, especially those that are formed via non-linear chemical reactions. Further, coarse grids may result ...

NOAA/EPA Symposium on Air Quality Modeling and its Applications, 20-21 Sept. 2005, Durham, North Carolina P1.54 Advection-Diffusion Equation on Unstructured Adaptive Grids

Discretizations based on unstructured grids have been widely used in other scientific disciplines for modeling problems bounded by complex geometries. Solution-adaptive techniques are relatively easy to implement on unstructured grids and in addition they provide a convenient way to model the multi-scale spanning nature of atmospheric flows. This paper describes the implementation of a higher-o...

A Hierarchical Multiscale Method for Two-Phase Flow Based upon Mixed Finite Elements and Nonuniform Coarse Grids

We analyse and further develop a hierarchical multiscale method for the numerical simulation of two-phase flow in highly heterogeneous porous media. The method is based upon a mixed finite-element formulation, where fine-scale features are incorporated into a set of coarse-grid basis functions for the flow velocities. By using the multiscale basis functions, we can retain the efficiency of an u...
